Precious metals: How to use metallic colours in your home

With the olympic games in Brazil just months away, perhaps it’s no surprise that “cherished gold” has been named colour of the year 2016 by Dulux. A development on last year’s copper blush colour, more and more of us are turning to metallics when it comes to decorating our homes.

Whilst this trend for everything glittery is great, getting it right can be difficult. At the end of the day, you want your home to look and feel like a palace, rather than a cold and emotionless castle.

Follow our tips below to get the metallic look without going overboard. From metal venetian blinds, to gold-painted surfaces, you can achieve a home that is literally dripping with opulence.

Copper kitchen

When we think of metallics in the kitchen, our thoughts may immediately be drawn to objects such as taps, which are normally chrome-plated, or kettles, that can often be made from stainless steel. Whilst silvers feature heavily, this shouldn’t restrict your imagination.

Copper is a more traditional metal finish that can contrast really well against lighter colours. When you’re out and about, seek out copper cooking implements such as colandars and pans, that can feature as part of a display. If you are going down the chrome or silver route, why not be more imaginative with your accessories? Metal mug trees or storage baskets can work brilliantly.  Chrome venetian blinds can work as well in the kitchen as the office and can look stunning

To add a slightly darker hue to your overall decor, a gun metal metallic venetian blind is a great choice for your windows. With a made-to-measure, perfect fit blind, you can even cover each pane individually, giving you greater control over your lighting.

All that glitters

Of course, as I’ve already mentioned, gold is the big, on-trend colour this year, so why not use it around the home? In the bedroom, it is fairly simple to repurpose your existing furniture with gold accessories such as knobs and handles.

But why not go a step further and add a touch of glamour to your bedroom with gold painted walls – or simply pick wallpaper with gold detailing? This colour works really well when combined with light blues, browns and greys, so look for those colours when choosing your bedding.

To keep your bedroom feeling warm and cosy, you should make use of the natural light available A metallic gold venetian blind will work wonders, allowing you to control the amount of sunlight that penetrates into your home, whilst fitting in perfectly with your colour scheme.

Be bedazzled in the bathroom

Much like the kitchen, the default choice when it comes to metals in your bathroom is inevitably chrome. Whether this is reflected in your taps, shower or mirror, it is a safe choice that most people stick to. However, there certainly is a trend towards different metal finishes when it comes to bathrooms.

The industrial style saw exposed copper piping make a significant impact, and this trend has resurfaced with copper taps and even copper-sided baths proving popular. Metallic paint can be used to update items such as mirrors and cabinets, whilst metallic mosaic border tiles will inject some interesting detail.

Venetian blinds are absolutely ideal for your bathroom. They are hardwearing, and suited to moist atmospheres. If you are keeping with the traditional chrome theme, why not choose a silver venetian blind? It will help to reflect light, enhancing the feeling of space.
